Mahesh Nalla is a professor at Michigan State University’s School of Criminal Justice. One of his multination projects on firearm violence for the United Nations resulted in the cornerstone of the draft (UN ECOSOC) International Protocol Against the Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms, Ammunition and Other Related Materials, as a supplement to the UN Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime.

Dr. Nalla spearheaded the development and introduction of the first full-time online M.S. in Criminal Justice in 1998, for which he received an Award for Excellence – Creative Program Credit-Award in 1999 presented to MSU by the University Continuing Education Association Region IV.

He served in various administrative roles for the school, including Interim Director, Associate Director and Director of Graduate Studies. He is Editor-In-Chief of the International Journal of Comparative and Applied Criminal Justice.

Research/Interest Area(s): Civil society, security, legitimacy and trust in public and private police; gendered spaces and victimization with a focus in emerging and post-colonial democracies.

  • Recipient of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) nomination to represent ACJS to present a paper at the 13th United Nations Crime Congress held in Doha, Qatar, March 2–19, 2015
  • Award of Excellence from the University of Maribor, Ljubljana, Slovenia in recognition of merit for support in researching police, policing, private security and assistance in the development of doctoral studies at the Faculty of Criminal Justice and Security, 2013
